Rivision Flashcards
Element
Made up of only 1 type of atom
Compound
Made up of 2 or more types of atoms chemically joined
Mixture
Made up of 2 or more types of atoms not chemically joined together
Pure
Not mixed with ant other substances or metal
Metals
a solid material which is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity (e.g. iron, gold, silver, and aluminium, and alloys such as steel).
Non metal
an element or substance that is not a metal.
Ductile
able to be deformed without losing toughness; pliable, not brittle.
Malleable
Able to be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking
Conducts
the transfer of energy from one atom to another through direct contact.
Reactivity
the ability of a substance to interact chemically with a second substance.
Corrosion
a natural process in which a refined metal is converted to a more chemically stable form, such as oxide, hydroxide, or sulphide.
Displacement
occurs when a more reactive element displaces, or pushes out, a less reactive element from a compound that contains the less reactive element.
Combustion
another name for burning.
Thermal decomposition
a chemical reaction. that happens when a compound breaks down when heated.
Exothermic
chemical reactions. which release energy from the chemicals into the surroundings.
Endothermic
Chemical reactions that absorb (or use) energy
