Rivers - Storm Hydrograph Flashcards
What does the hydrograph show?
Relationship between precipitation and the level of a river.
Lag Time
Difference between the time of the heaviest rainfall and the maximum level of the discharge of the river.
Throughflow
The water that moves downslope through the sub soil.
Throughfall
The water that drips off leaves during a rainstorm.
Interception
Process by which raindrops are prevented from directly reaching the soil surface.
Run Off
All the water that enters a river and eventually flows out the drainage basin.
Evaporation
Process by which liquid water is transformed into water vapour.
Evapotranspiration
Total amount of moisture removed by evaporation and transpiration from a vegetated land surface.
Precipitation
Water in any form that falls from the atmosphere.
Infiltration
The passage of water into the soil.
Groundwater
Slowest transfer of water through bands of sedimentary rock.
Stemflow
The water that runs down the stems and branches of plants and trees during and after a rainfall.
Percolation
Downward movement of water within the rock under the soil surface.
