Rivers - Meanders Flashcards
Where are meanders found ?
In the middle course of the river
What are meanders formed by ?
Erosion and deposition
Where are meanders also found ?
In the river flood plain
1st point of meanders
river travels faster due to the outside of the meander due to the fast flowing water having more energy causing lateral erosion
2nd point of meanders :
On the inside of the meander the water flows more slower so it means there is less energy causing deposition to
3rd point of meanders :
Due to lateral erosion, outside the meander becomes more deeper so less friction can occur causing more quicker flow of water and causing lateral erosion forming RIVER CLIFF
4th point of meanders :
Due to deposition on the inside of the meander , deposition makes the river more shallower causing more friction to occur and water flowing slower forming a SLIP OFF SLOPE
Cross section ?
The cross section of a meander is asymmetrical due to erosion on the outside of the meander and deposition of the inside
What occurs within the inside of the meander ?
Deposition
What is asymmetrical?
Not equal sides
What is a river cliff ?
Steep sided bank
What is a lateral erosion ?
Widens the valley
What is a slip off slope ?
Gentle slope
In a lateral erosion what occurs ?
River becomes deeper and more friction
What occurs in deposition ?
Less friction
Shallow river
