Rivers - Management Flashcards
Why are rivers managed?
To provide water supply
To improvemwater quality
To prevent/reduce flooding
Increase the river use for leisure and recreation
Flood barrage
Used to reduce the risks of flooding by river and sea
Hard engineering
Ways to reduce flooding/ manage the river by overcoming nature with man made structures (usually expensive)
Soft engineering
Ways to reduce flooding/ manage the river with schemes using the knowledge of a river(usually cheap)
Levees
High banks on the river due to lots of deposition, usually in times of flood
Channel straightening
Straightening rivers so that flood water is able to flow more quickly out to sea
Dredging
Deepening a river by removing sand and silt to increase the channel size and improve navigation by boats
Gabions
Rocks set in wire cages to reduce erosion
Flood plain zoning
Restricting the land close to a river to reduce the impact of floods
Sustainable management
New developments that do not destroy the environment but improve it
