-Rivers- Lower Course Flashcards
LO: To be able to describe and explain how features from the lower course of a river are formed.
What is a delta?
Deltas are little islands of deposition caused by the river found near the river mouth.
Lower course facts
-shallow river channel -river mouth -water travels slowly=deposition=deltas -flooding
What is a flood?
Floods occur when rivers overflow
What are flood plains and levees?
Levees are natural borders created by deposition that stop water from rivers overflowing. The floodplain is the area of lighter materials that are deposited further away from the river.
Name 5 factors that might cause flooding.
-hard rock (or concrete)- does not absorb water as well. -deforestation- not enough trees to absorb water. -saturated soil- cannot absorb more water. -tsunami/hurricane (unlikely) -steep slopes—> water flow is very fast—> doesn’t give solid enough time to absorb water.
