Rivers, Floods and Management Flashcards
What is the watershed?
A ridge of highland separating two drainage basins, a boundary.
What is a confluence?
The point at which two rivers or streams join.
What is a tributary?
A smaller river joining a larger river.
What is an input?
Water entering the system.
What are the 2 inputs in the hydrological cycle?
Precipitation and solar energy.
What are the different forms of precipitation?
Rain, snow, sleet and hail.
Why is solar energy considered an input?
It provides the entry for evaporation.
What is a store?
Where water is stored within the system.
What are the 6 stores in the hydrological cycle?
Interception, surface storage, vegetation storage, groundwater storage, soil storage and channel storage.
What is a flow/process?
Water moving within the system.
What is interception?
Temporarily water is stored on buildings/vegetation, Tarmac or concrete.
What is surface storage?
Depression storage, ponds lakes and on the arts surface.
What is vegetation storage?
Water stored in plants.
What is Groundwater storage?
Water underground in permeable rock strata (aquifers), it links to the water table.
What is soil storage?
Water is stored in the soil.
What is channel storage?
Water held in a river or stream channel.
What is base flow?
Channel flow from ground water flow that feeds into a river.
What is channel flow?
River discharge, the movement of water in a river.
