Rivers and valleys Flashcards
What is the formation of a v shaped valley
In the upper corse of a river water flows downhill eroding the landscape vertically by hydraulic action whitch is when air is compressed into the cracks of the rock causing it to break away , corrosion whitch is when weak acids in the water dissolve the rock and Atrition whitch is when the rocks hit into eachover becoming smaller and circular. The river erodes downwards and the sides of the valley are exposed to threeze thaw loosening the rocks and steepening the valley sides. The rocks that have fallen into the river acid the process of corrosion erodes it further. The river transports the rock downstream and the channel becomes wider and deeper creating a v- shaped valley.
What is the formation of a waterfall
The river flows over bands if soft rock sitting underneath hard rock. This causes differential erosion the river erodes through diffrent processes such as hydraulic action which is when the forces of the water compress air in cracks in the rock shattering it. Corrasion whitch is when rocks hit jnto the beds and banks if a river wearing them away. The softer rock is more quickly eroded by the river. The river undercuts the hard rock leaving an overhang.the river forms a plunge pool below the waterfall the overhang is unsupported and eventually falls into the pulse pool. The waterfall moves further up the valley.
What is the formation of a meander
In the middle corse of a river water is making the rocks move .the outside of the river moves fast and the inside moves slow. When the rocks hit the outside of the river it causes erosion erosion process are hydraulic action this is when forces in the water compress air into the cracks in the rock shattering it and corrosion which is when weak acids in the water dissolve the rocks .when they move on the inside they are deposited
What is the formation of an oxbow lake
In the middle corse of a river water is making the rocks move .the outside of the river moves fast and the inside moves slow. When the rocks hit the outside of the river it causes erosion erosion process are hydraulic action this is when forces in the water compress air into the cracks in the rock shattering it and corrosion which is when weak acids in the water dissolve the rocks .when they move on the inside they are deposited .continued erosion will cause the neack of the meander to narrow often during a flood water will cut through the neack and continue on a faster path.
Eventually the meander js abandoned and new deposition will seal off the old meander and foem and oxbow Lake this will eventually dry up.
