Q

How does a river chagne the land it flows over? NAme the three processes that take place to shape the landscape around rivers and coasts

A

a river flows non stop day and night on its way to a sea, lake or another river. It flows downhill as fast as it can by the easiest route. As it flows the river changes the land it flows over. It wears it away i some places by lifting material from it and carrying git along and dropping it somewhere else. These processes are Erosion, Transportation and Deposition

Q

What is Hydraulic Action

A

force of water into cracks in the bank. Over time this breaks the bank up

Q

What is Abrasion

A

rocks and stones and sand in the water act like sandpaper. They scrape the riverbed and banks and wear them away.

Q

What is Solution

A

acidic water dissolves minerals from the bed and banks and breaks them up.

What is Attrition

A

River pushes rocks against each other making them smaller, smoother and more round

Q

what are bends in a river called? describe them

A

Meanders - erosion on the outside bend with deposition on the inside bend

17
Q

what is the name of the landform crated when the ben breaks it neck?

A

oxford lake

18
Q

decribe how a waterfal forms and creates a step sides gorge. Can you draw a diagram?

A
  1. a river meets a band of softer less resistant rock 2. the rock causes abrasion of the river bed 3. the underlying softer rock is eroded awayc creating a notch 4. Hydraulic action makes the notch deeper creating plunge pool 5. process of erosion such as abrasion cause undercutting 6. more resistant rock is left unsupported and overhangs 7. more resistant work collapses into river bed 8. the process is repeated and the waterfall retreats upstream 9. a steep sided river valley is created called a gorge 10.
