Rivers Flashcards
What is corrasion/ abrasion
The grinding of rock fragments, carried by a river, against the beds and banks of that river
Causes the river to deepen and widen
Most powerful during a flood
What is attrition
The collision of rock fragments suspended in the water against each other
Rock particles broken into smaller pieces and become smoother
What is Solution/corrosion
River water chemically reacts with soluble minerals in rocks dissolving them
What is hydraulic action
Form of erosion that is caused by the power of moving water
Under cuts riverbank on outside of meander
Force air into cracks
4 transportation methods
Traction
Saltation
Suspension
Solution
What is traction
Boulders and pebbles rolled along riverbed at times of high discharge
What is saltation
Sand sized particles are bounced along the river bed by flow of water
What is suspension
Fine clay and sand sized particles are carried along water even at low discharges
What is solution
Some minerals dissolve in water such as calcium carbonate
This takes very little energy
4 times deposition is most likely
River enters a lake or the sea
Floods onto flood plain
Are of shallow water
Load increased suddenly e.g. landslide
