Rivers Flashcards
What are the four types of erosion?
- Solution
- Attrition
- Abrasion
- Hydraulic Action
What is Hydraulic Action?
Hydraulic Action is the sheer force of the water hitting against the rock.
What is Abrasion?
It is when the rock rubes across the surface across the surface to wear away, just like sandpaper.
What is Solution? (erosion)
A solution is when the acid in the water breaks small rocks.
What is Attrition?
It is when two rocks collide with each other to become smaller.
What are the types of transportation?
- Suspension
- Traction
- Saltation
- Solution
What is Suspension?
It is when the rock floats due to its size.
What is traction?
It is when the big rocks get rolled on the surface.
What is Saltation?
It is when the smaller rocks bounce off the surface.
What is solution? (transportation)
It is when the rock is dissolved in the water.
What is deposition?
When the material is dropped usually on a shore.
What are the 8 steps for how a waterfall is formed?
- Waterfalls are often formed where a layer of harder rock overlays a layer of softer rock.
- As the river passes over the softer rock, and then the softer rock erodes at a faster rate, forming a step in the river bed.
- Due to certain types of erosion (mostly hydraulic action and abrasion), it will make the notch deeper.
- A plunge pool is developed.
- Eventually, there is no support for the hard rock on top.
- Later the hard rock collapses into what is called a plunge pool.
- The process repeats and the water retreats.
- A gorge is formed by the waterfall retreats.
