Rivers Flashcards
Solution (erosion)
A process of erosion where the river bank and bed is disolved
Attrition
The bedload of the river hits each other and wears the corners away making it round
Floodplain
A flat area of land where the river will flow into once it has reached bank-full conditions
Erosion
A process that breaks or wears something away making it smoother
Saltation
A transportation process that bounces particles along the riverbed as the river doesn’t have enough energy to pick them up yet.
Solution (transportation)
A transportation method where the bed load is dissolved in the river giving it a brown like colour.
Traction.
A transportation process where the bed load is rolled along the river bed as it is too heavy to pick up. Happens in the upper course.
Abrasion
A erosional process where the bed load hits the banks and erodes them. I.E. sandpaper
Deposition
A process where the bed load of the river is dropped as the river looses its energy.
Suspension
A transportation process that picks up the silt particles and carries them downstream.
Bed load
The material that the river is carrying at any time in its journey.
Hydraulic action
An erosional process where the power of the water erodes the banks.
Transportation.
Transportation is a process where the bed load of the river is moved downstream towards the mouth
