What are the features of the upper course?
V shaped valley, steep sides, narrow, shallow channel
What are the features of the middle course?
Gently sloping valley sides, wider deeper channel
What are the features of the lower course?
Very wide, almost flat valley, very wide deep channel
What is the source?
Where a river starts
What is a tributary?
Smaller rivers that join to a main river
What is a confluence?
A point where to rivers join
What is the mouth?
Where a river flows into the sea or a lake
What is the course?
The path a river flows downhill
What are 2 things that can change the cross profile of a river?
Vertical erosion and lateral erosion
What does lateral erosion do?
Make the valley and channel wider
What does vertical erosion do?
Deepen the Channel and valley and make it a v shape
Where does lateral erosion occur?
Middle and lower course
Where does vertical erosion occur?
Upper course
