Rivers Flashcards
What is percolation?
This the process were water moves into the under lying rock
What is the start of the river called
Source
What is a sweeping bend in a river called
Meander
River joins the sea is called the
Mouth
A small river joins a larger river is called a
Tributary
What is a drainage basin
Area drained by a river system
Erosion is
The wearing away of land
An interlocking spur is
It does not have much energy to erode. When the river meets an area of hard rock it winds round it a series of hills form called Spurs
When a river retreats upstream it is called
A gorge
Describe the water cycle?
Water is constantly on the move between the atmosphere, oceans and land
What is a confluence?
The point were two rivers meet
What is a water shed?
A raised area of land separating one drainage basin from another.
What are the courses of a river?
The Upper course
The Middle course
And the Lower course
What is Abrasion?
This is a process by which the bed and banks are worn down by the rivers load.
What is attrition?
Material (the load) carried by the river bump into each other and so is smoothed and broken down into smaller particles
What is corrosion?
This is the chemical reaction of river water. The acids in the water slowly dissolve the bed and the banks
What is traction?
Boulders and pebbles are rolled along the river bed?
What is saltation?
Small sand particles are bounced along the the river bed by the flow of water.
