Rivers Flashcards
Evaporation
Water changing from its liquid form to a gas (water vapour) and returning to the atmosphere
Precipitation
Water deposited on the ground as a liquid or as a solid, e.g rain. Sleet, hail, snow or even fog
Evapotranspiration
The combined process of evaporation and transpiration that results in the loss of water from leaves
Surface runoff
Water moving across the surface of the ground. This may happen when rain cannot soak into the ground, e.g on Tarmac surfaces or even during heavy rainfall
Groundwater flow
Water moving within rocks below the ground
Through flow
Water moving downhill through the soil layers. It will generally flow slowly unless concentrated in natural pipes in the soil
Interception
Plants trap some of the precipitation so it may not immediately pass to the ground. Some may drip to the ground as throughfall
Infiltration
Water soaking into the soil from the surface
Percolation
Water moving from the surface layers of soil into deeper layers of soil and rock
Channel flow
Water moving downhill within rivers
Overland flow
The combined processes of channel flow and surface flow
Surface storage
Water stored on the surface of the ground
Soil moisture
Water held within the soil, the quantity of which will vary
Groundwater storage
Water stored in the rocks below the ground
