Rivers Flashcards
Soil moisture utilisation is… ?
When vegetation uses water stored as soil (common in winter)
What are the four methods of erosion?
Abrasion
Hydraulic action
Corrosion
Attrition
What is precipitation ??
Water In any form which falls from the atmosphere e.g. Snow rain hail
What does transpiration mean?
Evaporation of water from plants
What is vegetation storage?
Water that is stored in plants.
What is the definition of evaporation?
Water that is heated by the sun and turns into water vapour
Define ‘stem flow’
Water running down stems and branches during and after rain fall to reach the ground
What does interception mean?
It is the process where the rain is prevented from directly reaching the ground. For example, the vegetation
What is ground water storage?
When water is stored under ground
Define ‘infiltration’
The soaking of water into the soil (ground)
What does surface storage mean?
Where water is stored in places like lakes, reservoirs and puddles.
Define ‘ground water flow’
Movement of water flowing slow below water table through permeable soil.
What is percolation?
This is where water moves vertically down through soil into the water table.
What is evapotranspiration?
The total amount of water removed by evaporation and transpiration from a vegetated land surface
Define run off
All the water that enters a river and eventually flows out of the drainage basin. Measured by discharge
