Q

What are levees

A

Levees are raised banks (natural or manmade) that form along the edges of rivers & help prevent flooding. They develop through the process of deposition

Q

Name a a feature of deposition

A

Flooding Occurs: During heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the river’s water level rises & overflows its banks . As the floodwater spreads out, it slows down, losing energy and dropping the heaviest sediments (such as sand and gravel) closest to the riverbanks. Over time, repeated flooding deposits more and more sediment, gradually building up raised embankments—these are the natural levees.
Lighter materials like silt and clay are carried further away, helping form fertile floodplains beyond the levees. Artificial Levees can also be built by humans using soil, concrete, or other materials to control flooding and protect settlement

Q

Name a Feature of river erosion

A

A waterfall is a feature of erosion found in the youth stage of a river. Waterfalls are found in areas with bands of hard and soft rock (otherwise known as resistant and less resistant rocks). The hard rock takes longer to erode than the soft rock (differential erosion) so the river erodes the land at different rates.
