Rivers Flashcards
Deposition and erosion
Meanders=
On the outside of a bend, water flows the fastest because the river channel is deeper meaning there is less friction to slow it down. This means more erosion will take place, forming river cliffs. On the inside of a bend, the river current is slower meaning more friction. This means that eroded material is deposited, forming slip-off slopes.
Ox-bow lakes=
Erosion causes the outside bends to be closer t until there’s only small part let between the bends (the neck). Eventually, the river breaks through and the river flows on the short course. Over time, deposition cuts off the meander forming an ox-bow lake.
Causes of deforestation
1 Commercial farming- cattle ranching accounts for 65-70%. Other commercial farming adds 5-10% more.
3 Logging- Cutting down trees for resources like teak or mahogany. Clear cutting down of trees.
4 Mining
6 Road building
7 Subsistence farming
Leeds flood
Flood walls and embankments to product railway line= reduces access to the river, high maintenance and doesn’t look nice. But provides habitats for river bank animals and walking routes
300,00 trees planted from Malham to Leeds
Flood storage basin- controls water flower
New moveable weirs- controls river levels
Plant and animal adaptations
