RIVERS Flashcards
The upper course
Steep, small, high energy, V-shaped
The middle course
Slow, Carry’s sediment, muddy, wider
The lower course
Wide, sides disappear, approaches mouth, large floodplain, deposition
Solution/corrosion
Soluble particles and minerals dissolved into the river
Hydraulic action
Water pressure building up and gradually wearing away the banks
Attrition
Rocks being transported and smashing into each other to become smaller and smoother
Abrasion/corrasion
Rocks carried along wearing down the river bed and banks like sand paper
Gradient
Steep gradient resulting in water being pulled by gravity cutting and eroding channel
Rock resistance
Increasing more erodible rock
Velocity
The speed of the water
Discharge
Amount of water flowing per second
Levee
River banks that can increase height due to sediment
Hard engineering
Heavy machinery, working against nature, artificial
Soft engineering
Adapt to nature/work with it, cheaper, less effective then hard engineering
Suspension
Fine light materials carried along
