rivers Flashcards
what is abrasion
it is when a material carried in the river rubs and hits the side and banks of the river eroding it
what is attrition
it is when particles carried down the river collide into each other making each other smooth.
what is solution
river water is slightly acidic so it can dissolve some rocks and minerals
hydraulic action what is it
the sheer force of the water hitting the bed forces the water into cracks breaking them apart
what is traction and when does it occur
it occurs during flood and it is when big rocks and boulders roll along the bed
what is saltation
it is when small pebbles, sand and gravel bounce along the river bed
what is suspension
fine particles of silt and clay sized substances are carried in the river
upper course of the river Tees features
narrow steep sided valley , river occupies the whole valley floor(interlocking spurs)
vertical erosion downwards
slow velosity?
large and angular
middle course of the middle tees
wider valley with distinct sides and flat flood plain(meanders, oxbow lakes)
flatter erosion, transport processes and deposition
fast velocity
rounded pebbles
lower course river Tee
very wide flat flood plain, valley sides9meanders levees)
transport processes and deposition
slows as it meets the sea
muds and silts
