Rivers Flashcards
What is erosion?
The wearing away of different areas by attrition, hydrolic action or corrosion.
Define attrition
The wearing away of rocks or stones in the river as they bump into eachother
Define corrosion
The wearing away of the river bed and banks by stones and gravel
Hydrolic action
The wearing away of the river bed and banks by the force of water
What is a meander?
A bend in the lake
What is an ox bow lake?
A ‘u shaped’ body of water that forms when a meander is cut off from a river
Explain Formation of a meander
When rivers go over flatter land, they form meanders where the river eroded sideways into the bank in a process called lateral erosion
explain the formation of an ox bow lake
They form when there are meanders in the river. The outsides of the meander are eroded to create a larger turn. Erosion starts to narrow the neck between the ends of the meander and in time the river will cut through it. Deposition will then block off the old meander to create a straight river and an ox bow lake
