river tees - landforms Flashcards
1
Q
important facts
A
- north east of england
- its source is high in the pennine hills
2
Q
upper course
A
- has a high force waterfall
- A resistant band of igneous rock (dolerite) cuts across the valley. Its resistance has led to the development of a waterfall. Underlying weaker rock (limestone) is undercut. Waterfall retreats upstream to form a gorge
3
Q
middle course
A
- it has meanders and Oxbow lakes
- As the River Tees starts to erode sideways (lateral erosion), it forms meanders. These can be identified in the middle course near Barnard Castle
4
Q
lower course
A
- it has meanders, levees and estuary
- The meanders in the lower course are much larger, and oxbow lakes have formed. In this area there are also levees which have formed when the river has flooded
- The River Tees has a very large estuary with mudflats and sandbanks which supports wildlife in the area. Sites such as Seal Sands are protected areas
