Chenggyechon river
Location
Seoul, one of the largest cities and one of the most densely populated
Chenggyechon was built over a small stream and had become overcrowded with traffic
What happened
In 2003 a plan was designed to restore the river and this was transformed into a 5.8 km ecologically sensitive green space
The elevated freeway and concrete deck covering the stream were dismantled and water was pumped by a nearby river to keep the ongoing stream
Evaluation
Become popular with residents and visitors for a place of rest and relaxation
Popular tourist destination drawing 18.1 million visitors
