River profile and upper course features Flashcards
Name the three different courses in a river
Upper course, middle course and lower course
Describe the upper course
Shallow and narrow
Describe the upper courses’ shape
V-shaped, steep gradient
Describe the middle course
Wider, deeper channel
Describe the middle courses’ shape
U-shaped, gentle sloping
Describe the lower course
Very wide and deep channel
Describe the shape of the lower course
Wide U-shaped, almost flat
What is a long profile of a river?
Shows how a river changes from source to mouth
What is a cross profile of a river?
Shows what the cross section of a river looks like
Name the steps to create the upper course of a river
- Soft rock worn away
- Hard rock undercut and unsupported
- Hard rock collapses
- Waterfall retreats upstream
- Steep sided gorge left behind
Name the three main steps to creating a meander
- Meanders constantly change shape.Erode in lateral direction
- Depostition occurs on the inside of slow bend, leading to slip-off
- Erosion on the outside of fast part of bend, creating river cliff
Name the 4 different types of erosion
- hydraulic action
- solution
- abrasion
- attrition
What is hydraulic action?
The force of the water causing the banks and bed of the river to erode
What is solution?
The acids in the water causing erosion
What is abrasion?
The materials carried by the river scrape along the river bed/banks
