river processes and landforms Flashcards
what are the 3 fluvial processes in a river
erosion, transportation and deposition
3 types of weathering
physical, chemical and environmental
physical weathering
rock is broken down into smaller pieces. This occurs due to changes in temperature - such as freeze thaw and exfoliation
chemical weathering
rocks disintegrate and dissolve in slightly acidic rainwater
biological weathering
rocks are broken apart by the roots of plants
what are the 2 types of mass movement
slumping and soil creep
slumping
where the slope is eroded by the river. This undercuts the slope causing large scale movement of material down the slope
soil creep
the influence of gravity causes weathered material to slowly move down the slope towards the river
4 types of erosion
hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution
4 types of deposition and transportation
traction, saltation, suspension and solution
where is vertical erosion more dominant
in the upper course
where is lateral erosion more dominant
in the lower course
deposition
when rivers dont havee enough energy to transport materials it drops them.
bedload
largest materials that are deposited first
alluvium
lighter materials that are carried further downstream eg.sand
