River Processes Flashcards
What is hydraulic Action?
Where the force of the water enters cracks in the bed and banks and puts it under pressure causing erosion.
What is attrition?
Rocks and stones hit each other breaking up into smaller pieces.
What is solution?
Soluble minerals in the rock water wear away in water.
What is abrasion?
Rocks and stones scrape against the bed and bank and act like sandpaper wearing away the rock.
What process is attrition?
Erosion
What process is Hydraulic action?
Erosion
Why process is Abrasion?
Erosion
What two processes is Solution?
Erosion and Transportation
What are the 4 processes of erosion?
Attrition
Hydraulic Action
Abrasion
Solution
What is Solution?
Transportation
Minerals are dissolved in the water and carried in Solution.
What is suspension?
Fine, light material is carried along in the water.
What is Saltation?
Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed.
What is traction?
Large boulders and rocks are rolled along river bed.
