River Processes Flashcards
What does erosion do
Wears away and removes loosens material
What is hydraulic action
Water sources it’s way into cracks which puts pressure on the banks and bed causing pieces to break off
What is abrasion
The grinding of rock fragments
What is attrition
When rocks being transported hit/smash together and break into smaller and smoother particles
What is solution
Chemicals in the river dissolve minerals in the rocks, bad and banks carrying them away in solution
What does the type of transport that can take place depends on
The size of the sediment and the amount of energy
What is traction
The heaviest materials are rolled along the river bed
This requires the largest amount of energy
What is saltation
Medium sized load is bounced along the river bed
What is suspension
Small partials are carried within the water above the river bed in the turbulent flow
What is solution
Rock that has been dissolved by the water are carried in solution. This requires the least amount of energy
When can deposition occur
Shallow water
The volume of water is decreased
Near the mouth of the river
