river processes Flashcards
1
Q
what is river load?
A
the material which the river is carrying.
2
Q
what is river velocity?
A
the speed at which water moves in the river channel.
3
Q
what is transportation?
A
the movement of material by the river.
4
Q
what is corrosion?
A
the acids in the water causing erosion.
5
Q
what is attrition?
A
eroded material carried by the river hits into each other, breaking down into smaller pieces.
6
Q
what is hydraulic action?
A
the sheer force of the river causing the bed and the banks to erode.
7
Q
what is abrasion?
A
material carried by the river erodes, scralung along the bed and banks.
8
Q
how is material transported downstream?
A
- suspension- fine, light particles are carried in the flow of the river, tehy are held in suspension.
- traction- the dragging of large boulders along the river bed by the river.
- solution- minerals dissolved in the river and carried in solution.
- saltation- small pebbles and rocks are bounced along the river bed.
