River Processes Flashcards
What happens during Corrasion/abrasion
Rocks and fragments carried by the river grind against the bed and banks of the river
What happens during attrition
As rock partials collide they are broken into smaller pieces
What happens during solution/corrosion
River water chemically reacts with soluble rocks and devolves them
What happens during the hydraulic action
The high force of the moving water can split rocks apart
What happens during traction
Boulders and pebbles are rolled along the river bed at times of high discharge
What happens during saltation
Sand sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the flow of water
What happens during suspension
Fine clay and sand particles are carried along with the water even at low discharges
What happened during solution
Some minerals dissolve in the water such as calcium carbonate. This requires very little energy
