River process Flashcards
What is hydrolic action?
water smashes against the river bed. air gets trapped in cracks and causes rocks to break apart
What is abrasion?
When pebbles and rocks move along the river bank causing a sand paper effect
What is attrition?
When rocks hit eachother causing them to become smaller and more rounded
What is solution?
When the water dissolves certain rocks. e.g limestone
What is traction?
Large heavy rocks and pebbles moving along the river bed
What is saltation?
Pebbles are bouncing along the river bed
What is suspension?
When very small rocks and pebbles are being carried within the water
What is solution?
The transportaion of dissolved chemicals in the water. depending on the soluble rock
What is deposition?
When the river loses energy and starts to drop the materials it has been carrying
What is a watershed?
the area of high land forming the edge of a river basin
what is a source?
Where a river begins
What is a mouth?
