River Landforms Flashcards

Q

How does a meander form?

A

It starts of as just a bend. Then water flows faster on the outer curve of the bend, and slower on the inner curve.Causing the outer bank to erode but the material gets deposited on the inner bank.Over time, the outer bank grows even more making a ‘loop’ bend.

Q

How does a ox - bow lake form?

A

Erosion continues and the neck of the meander gets worn away, it gets narrower and narrower. During flooding the river takes a shortcut straight across the neck.soon the loop gets sealed off and it becomes an ox- bow lake. Over time it gets covered in weeds and soil it eventually disappears.

Q

How are deltas formed?

A

It forms through deposition of what the river is carrying, as the river slows down near the mouth it drops what it is carrying and new land is formed because of this.

Q

How are floodplain and levees made?

A

Floodplain are made when a river overflow or it has been raining heavily. When the flood is over the river has left behind all of what it was carrying and forms a floodplain.
Levees are also created by floods. When it floods the materials that the river has been carrying get pushed up the sides making the bank higher.
