River Landforms Flashcards
How are waterfalls formed
1) the soft rock erodes quicker than the hard rock this creates a step
2) the hard rock becomes undercut overtime and hangs over
3) abrasion and hydraulic action erode to create a plunge pool
4) overtime thhis gets bigger increasing the overhang until the hard rock is not supported and it collapses
5) this process continues and waterfall retreats
Where are meanders formed
formed in the middle coarse
How are meanders formed
1) As the river gains more velocity because it is the middle coarse
2) water is pushed onto the outside of the river
3) this causes more erosion round the bends
4) this is because if hydraulic action and abrasion
5) once it starts to bend the water wants it go straght again so it cuts of the meander to create an oxbow lake
What is a floodplain
An area if low lying land subjected to flooding
