What is a river flood?
A river flood is when a river overflows and water spreads out onto land
What are the 4 causes of flooding?
- Rock and soil type
- Very wet soil
- Very dry soil

Explain Rock and soil type
Impermeable rocks and soil don’t allow rain to soak through them.
Explain Very wet soil
Any further rain is unable to soak into the ground and remains on the surface.

Rain is unable to soak through the crust and so it remains on the surface.
Explain Steep slopes
The water has little time to soak into the ground, so most stays on the surface

- Collect warm clothes, food, and a flashlight
- Switch off electricity and gas
