River Erosion Flashcards
Abrasion
The wearing away of the bed and bank by the load of a river
Attrition
Rocks smashing against eachother to break into smaller, smoother and rounder particles.
Hydraulic action
The force of air and water on the sides of the rivers and in cracks
Solution
Naturally occuring carbonic acid removing chemical ions and carrying in water
- Especially calcium - chalk - limestone
List factors of erosion (6)
PH Load Geology Gradient Velocity Human impact
Why is load a factor?
The heavier and sharper the load, the greater the potential for erosion.
Why is velocity a factor?
The greater the velocity, the greater the potential for erosion
Why is geology a factor?
Soft rocks such as sand and chalk are easily eroded
Igneous rocks are not as easily as eroded.
Why is PH a factor?
Rates of solution are increased when water is more acidic.
Why is human impact a factor?
Deforestation, dams and bridges interfere with natural flow of water ususally end up increasing rate of erosion
