River Action Flashcards
Drainage Basin
The entire area drained by river and tributaries
Watershed
Boundary between each drainage basin
Relief
How steep or gentle land iz
Confluence
Point at which rivers join
Dentritic patterns
Upland, undlying material eroded in all directions, main rivers have deepest valley
Trellis patterns
Right angled confluences, found where folding has occured it hardness of rock varies
Radial Patterns
Running off conical hill or mountain
Parallel pattern
Parallel due to shape of structure of land, run along valleys created by fold Mt.s
Deranged pattern
No particular pattern, common in lowlands subject to glacial deposition
Erosion:
Hydraulic Action
Force of river against banks, air gets trapped in cracks, pressure weakens banks and wears away
Erosion:
Abrasion
Rocks being carried smash together and break into smaller, smoother and rounder pieces
Erosion:
Solution
Soluble particles dissolved by river
Transport: Traction
Heavy rocks and boulders rolled along bed, happens often in floods, current is strong
Transport: Saltation
Small stones bounced along bed, slower flow than traction
Transport: Suspension
Tiny particles of clay suspended in water. Particles settle if kept in a jar and water will look clear overnight
