burse
case for communion linens (corporal, purificators, chalice veil)
chalice
footed cup in which wine for Eucharist is consecrated and from which it is administered.
chalice veil
decorated cloth covering chalice before consecration; fair linen cloth that used to cover the chalice between end of Communion and cleansing of vessels after Benediction.
ciborium
covered vessel that contains bread of communion; canopy over the altar (aka baldaquin)
corporal
white square linen napkin that is spread on the altar, over the altar cloth. chalice and paten are placed on it at beginning of Great Thanksgiving.
crozier
bishop’s staff
cruet
flask to hold water or wine at Eucharist
fair linen
cloth or runner spread on altar, falling over the ends of it. Rubric requires it when communion starts. (not the same as corporal)
flagon
pitcher shaped vessel in which wine is consecrated; supplement to wine consecrated in chalice.
frontal
cloth hung in front of altar that reaches floor (aka antependium). Laudian frontal is carpet falling to floor on all sides.
host
(consecrated) bread of Eucharist
incense
fragrant smoke from burning gum/bark in a censer or thurible. symbol of prayer.
lavabo
ceremonial cleansing of celebrant’s fingers after offertory. (lavabo bowl)
pall
stiff square cloth that covers the chalice; cloth that covers casket during funeral service.
paschal candle
large decorated candle that is lighted during easter vigil, and then all services until Pentecost. symbolizes light of Christ. After Pentecost it goes near the font and comes out for funerals.
