Risk Management Flashcards
Hazard:
Something with the potential to cause harm
Risk:
The likelihood of harm from a particular hazard occurring and the severity of the consequences
Control measure:
Any measure taken to reduce risk.
Hierarchy of control
- Eliminate
- Substitute
- Isolate
- Engineer Controls
- Administrative Controls
- PPE
3 types of risk assessment
Generic
Dynamic
Analytical
Generic Risk Assessment
Will reflect a long-standing risk I.e. house fire, car fire
Will determine a generic procedure
Dynamic Risk Assessment
The continuous process of identifying hazards, assessing risks and taking action to eliminate or reduce those risks, by monitoring and reviewing the rapidly changing circumstances of operational incident.
Analytical Risk Assessment
Carried out as early as possible
Generally within 45minutes of attendance.
Re-commenced every 20mins or as dictated by Ops OIC.
Firefighter safety maxim
Risk vs. Benefit
- Eliminate
Remove the cause of the danger completely
- Substitute
Replace the hazardous work practice or machine with an alternative
- Isolate
Separate the hazard from the people at risk from injury
- Engineer controls
Physical changes, eg redesign machine by adding safeguards
- Administrative controls
Install signs, rotate jobs etc
- PPE
Provide gloves, earplugs etc.
