Whats the most dangerous COSHH substance?
Airborne gases or vapours like carbon monoxide as you cant see them or smell them

- Salmonella and ecoli

Whats RIDDOR?
Reporting injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations
What does RIDDOR enable?
Health and safety executive and local authorities to identify where and how risks arise and to investigate serious accidents.

What must you report?
- death
- fractures (no fingers or toes)
- amputations
- loss of sight
- crush injuries to head, torso or internal organs
- severe burns
- unconsciousness
- in hospital for 24hours
- when employee cant come to work for over 7days
- injuries to members of the public and people not at work where they have to go to the hospital
- work related diseases
- dangerous occurrences (near misses)
Reportable injuries
Must keep a record of them as well as diseases or dangerous occurrences. Date and method of reporting must be included.
Records need to be kept in a acceptable form
Reducing the risk
- elimination
- substitution
- safe working procedures
- training, instruction and supervision
- personal and respiratory protective equipment

Whats an improvement notice?
Where one or more statutory area are being contravined by an employer/employee. Given 21 days to improve
Whats a prohibition notice?
Where a work place activity may give rise to serious injury. You must stop carrying out the activity until its put right.
Whats an intervention fee?
£129 1hr. 0vpaid for HSE to investigate. The contravention investigation + enforcement action.
Prosecutions:
Takes 9 weeks before conviction to allow for approvals. Now unlimited fines.
Was £2000 now unlimited from 12 march 2015

Manual handling operations handling 1992:
- state the common injuries associated with mandual handling (back injuries, pulled muscles)
- state the common manual handling activities on the zoo (mulching, shoveling, lifting feed bags)
- pick associated with the above (back injuries)
- what alternative ways have you to do the jobs? ( more people to help, two people to life heavy things)
