Rise of Mammals Flashcards
Mammal
warm blooded, fur/hair, live birth (ish), milk, three middle ear bones
Endothermy
ability to control body temperature through internal means (shivering, increasing metabolism)
homeothermy
maintaining a stable internal body temperature regardless of external temperatures
Tachymetabolism
maintenance of a very high resting metabolism
Adaptions that coincide with warm-bloodedness
more efficient metabolism, greater oxygen intake abilities and nutrient uptake, large lungs +diaphragm +improved circulation, more efficient method of removing waste
fur/hair
insulation and sensory
Monotremes
lay eggs, incubate eggs, only 4 species (platypus etc)
marsupials
give birth to underdeveloped live young, continue to develop in protective pouch
placental mammals
placenta facilitates exchange of nutrients, gestation entirely within mother
Use of mammalian adaptation
possibly nocturnal adaptation to exploit niche
Early mammals
small- the ones that survived dinosaur extinction
