-Republican government cut taxes for all (Would win over the wealthy, people earning over $1 million found their taxes lowered from $600,000 to $200,000)
-Voters didn’t like the Democrats intervention in peoples lives
-Allowed individual Americans more money to spend
Business
-Cut the regulations and rules that businesses must follow (Laissez-faire approach)
-Businesses began to invest more of their profits in increased production
-Promoted pro-business environment in the country
-American people became wealthier and were able to buy more goods (Roaring 20s/consumerism)
Stock Market
-Promotion of stock exchange
-Stocks in big companies could be cashed in and bring riches to many working/middle class people couldn’t have dreamt of
-Many Americans assumed that such growth in their personal wealth would continue
Foreign policy
-Adopted isolationism (used the slogan ‘America first’)
-Adopted a ‘good neighbour’ policy with Latin America countries
-Popular with immigrants who had fled to America precisely to escape European wars
Immigration
-Emergency quota Act 1921- restricted the amount of immigrants to 375,000 a year
-National origins Act 1924- max number of immigrants to 150,000 per year
-Many middle class Americans felt intense anger towards these ‘new’ immigrants because they were often poor and relied on government help
