Empire at its zenith (most powerful)
(1300-1340)
- Mansa Musa 1 came to power
- brought the empire fame and prestige with his great pilgrimage to Mecca
- his generals added Walata and Taghaza salt mines to the empire
The fragmenting empire
(1340-1440)
- grown at a terrific rate in both size and wealth by the time scholar Ibn Battuta arrived
- this wealth and power may have been the reason behind more aggressive attacks by its neighbors
1450
After 1450, the empire began to crumble
The Mansas
- Mansa Musa 1 was succeeded by his son in 1337
- Mansa Maghan ruled for 4 years and then died
- during this time, horsemen from the North raided Timbuktu
- Songhai asserted independence from Mali in 1340
- slowly, more territories broke away
After Mansa Maghan died
The heirs to the Mali throne fought and failed to govern , more territories broke away and the empire shrunk
15th Century
By the early 15th Century, Mali suffered a violent revolt in its northern province and lost control of an important trade route.
1444
The Portuguese arrived on the Senegalese coast in 1444, sailing in caravels to launch slave raids on coastal inhabitants.
After Portuguese arrived
Mali’s territories were caught off guard by the ships and white looking people
1462
After some fighting, by 1462, the Portuguese and king of the region made a peace deal and set up a trade agreement.
