North Zone- Industry, squatter settlements, international airport
Centro- Historic building, CBD and financial centre
West Zone- Wealthy suburbs, industrial areas and Olympic stadium

What are the social challenges of urbanisation in Rio?
Healthcare - lack of access in favelas
Education- compulsory is 6-14, many drop out to join gangs or work
Water supply- 12% of households in rio don’t have access to Clean running water
Energy- common blackouts, residents in favelas tap illegally into electricity
What is the solution to the social challenges?
Healthcare- sending medical staff in, improving transportation ( cable carts)
Education- Volunteers, grants for poorer families
Water supply- investment into water treatment
Energy- new nuclear plant and hydroelectric projects

Crime- Increased greatly possibly through unemployment, gang violence and gangs running favelas, drug trafficking
Unemployment- 2015 recession led to large amount of unemployment, favelas unemployment is over 20%. Many people work in the informal economy

Workers get no insurance, no contract, don’t have to pay taxes which has a knock on effect on the government
