The North zone is mostly poor neighborhoods with very little appeal for tourists. With the exception of Tijuca Forest. The North zone’s most famous attraction is the Maracana stadium. It is mostly where all the industrialized buildings are.

The west zone is after Barra da Tijuca. Barra is the most recently modernized area of Rio with a new middle-class neighborhood, transformed from a lower class area into a wealthy coastal suburb with lots of shopping areas,
However, the area of Campo Grande is an industrial area with low-quality housing surrounding the steelworks.
This zone was also chosen as the site for the main Olympic stadium and competitor village for the 2016 games.

Centro zone

Centro is the historic core of the city, as well as its financial centre. The headquarters of huge Brazilian companies such as Petrobas and CVBB (Brazil’s largest oil and mining company).

There are historic and cultural buildings (museums, churches, colonial architecture etc.). It also contains modern skyscrapers.

It is located in the centre of the traditional neighbourhood called Lapa, an important bohemian area frequented by townspeople and tourists.

South zone

The south zone is the richer and prettier part of the city with dozens of hills and mountains, It is very famous for its marvelous beaches. It is also safer than other areas, but care must be taken in the slums covering the hills. It is the south zone where most of the day tours and nightlife will take place, so this is the area that is most recommended to tourists to stay.

It is now Rio’s most exclusive and famous destination with the World famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches at its heart. Most of the expensive tourist hotels and restaurants are found here.

This beach area has been dominated in recent years by luxury flats. It is the wealthiest district in all of South America.
