Magna Carta-1215
This was the first document in British history that protected rights. It restricted power of the monarch over citizens
Habeas Corpus Act- 1679
This act established the foundation of a right to a fair trial. In Latin it means ‘you have a body’ and it protects against unlawful imprisonment
English Bill of rights- 1689
The bill of rights was passed after the glorious revolution in 1688. This further restricted the monarchs power and established the requirement for regular parliaments and free elections. It also established protection against cruel punishment
Universal declaration of human rights: 1948
After the end of WW2, it resulted in an international movement seeking to enshrine human rights across all nations. The UDHR was adopted by the UN. It established a large variety of fundamental rights including life, liberty, security, free speech.
Human rights act- 1998
The HRA was passed in the UK in 1998. This incorporated the ECHR into UK law, meaning that people could challenge the law on the basis of contravening their rights in UK courts
Equality act- 2010
The equality act identified protected characteristics such as Race, Gender and sexuality that were protected against discrimination by employers and public institutions.
