Right Sided Heart Failure Flashcards
Three classic signs of RHF
Raised JVP
Peripheral oedema
Hepatomegaly
Why do you get these signs?
The heart can’t pump blood around the body, so it builds up where it can e.g. in the neck and legs.
Hepatomegaly is due to the increased blood building up in hepatic veins, causing enlargement of the liver.
What can cause RHF?
Tricuspid regurgitation
Cor pulmonale
How does tricuspid regurgitation cause RHF?
Leaky tricuspid valve so blood backs up in atria
Extra blood in atria get pumped back into ventricles
Volume loading in ventricles therefore ECCENTRIC hypertrophy
This makes it worse and enlargens the annula (ring of valve?) essentially leading to more regurg
This results in more backflow of blood
Less CO
Leads to HF
