right realism - why does crime happen Flashcards

1
Q

biological differences + solution/AO3

A
  • combination of social and biological factors
  • biological traits make some innately predisposed to crime, e.g. low intelligence, taken advantage of
  • zero tolerance policing - focus on controlling streets by cracking down on minor deviance, e.g. prostitution
  • ignores wider structural causes of crime - unequal distribution of wealth/power

inadequate socialisation + solution/AO3

A
  • nuclear family undermined by the welfare state
  • perverse incentive, creates dependency culture

Q

rational choice theory + solution/AO3

A
  • people commit crime based on a rational calculation
  • will commit it if the rewards outweigh the costs
  • routine activity theory - must be a motivated offender, suitable target and absence of a guardian for crime to occur
  • target hardening - more difficult to commit crime, through CCTV etc, costs will then outweigh the benefits
  • displacement - will just commit crime in a lower risk area instead
