Right Realism Flashcards
biological differences
Wilson and Hernstein: crime caused by bio + social factors. bio traits make some people predisposed to crime e.g. heightened aggression (men high testosterone) and low intelligence (IQ)
inadequate socialisation
Murray: NF undermined by the welfare state which is a negative reward encouraging SPFs - creates dependency culture people rely on state - underclass fail to socialise their children into shared norms and values - lack male role model (lack discipline) bc men are not supporting families
rational choice theory
Clarkes assumes individuals are rational beings with free will. commiting crimes depending on risks and rewards. if reward outweighs risks - more likely to commit crime.
biological differences: solution - zero tolerance policy
police should focus on controlling streets to make law abiding citizens safer. cracking down on minor deviance like begging and prostitution to make people take law and order seriously
maximum punishment for minor crime like theft
inadequate socialisation: solution - ZTP broken windows
Wilson and Kelling’s: must keep neighbourhoods orderly to prevent crime taking hold. any signs of deterioration immediately dealt with to send a message that deviance isnt tolerated like painting over graffiti as soon as its painted there.
rational choice theory: solution: target hardening
increasing the cost to commit crimes like installing cameras (CCTV, ring doorbells, dashcams), locking cabinets.
