Aim
To compare the effect of fluoxetine vs. placebo in combination with CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy), on depression, substance abuse disorder and conduct disorder
Method
Independent measures, randomised controlled study.
CBT was directed at substance abuse rather than depression
Participants
126 adolescents with diagnosed depression
also had diagnosed conduct disorder and substance abuse disorder.
Procedure
Participants spent 16 weeks being treated with either:
- fluoxetine and a course of CBT directed at dealing with substance abuse.
OR - placebo and a course of CBT directed at substance abuse.
Results
combination of fluoxetine and CBT maybe the most effective option as it led to significant improvements soon one measure of depression.
Conclusions
results indicate that fluoxetine combined with CBT is the most effective treatment for depression for those with substance abuse disorder.
