What is rigging?
The means of supporting, suspending, or moving equipment, material, or people in the air.
What are the roles and responsibilities of a ground rigger?
- Maintains safer perimeters beneath high work being done
- Maintains safe path and perimeter around aerial work platforms
- Monitors the movement of aerial work
- Builds points for high work
- Reads drawings and floor markings
- Rigs motors, assembles & checks motor control systems & makes attachments to items for hosting/flying
- Does visual & mechanical safety inspections
- Must know the rescue plan
A rigger completes the job by…
- Using their knowledge & training of system
- Working w/in system’s safe working limits
- Working safely w/in venue specific operating procedures
- Following provincial regulations

Types of Natural Rope
Manila, hemp, cotton, sisal
Types of Synthetic Rope
Polyester, nylon, polypropylene, Kevlar
Synthetic: made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product
What should you remember when choosing rope?
Cost, strength, application
Single Braid Rope
Basic braid, no core, will flatten, easy to tie & hard to untie
Double Braid Rope
Core in center to hold round shape, easy to handle
Parallel Core Rope
Inside core not connected to outside (inside can be pulled out), core strands run straight (not twisted), very low stretch
Kernmantle / Para-cord
Similar to parallel core, EXCEPT interior strands are woven together, less bend/workability, more long lasting
MOST COMMON ROPE IN THE FIELD
3 Strand Rope
3 strands woven together by the fibers in each, strands run 1 direction, fibers run the other
Name 4 types of knots:
- Clove Hitch
- Sheet Bend
- Bowline (loop knot)
- Opera Knot
