Rig Objectives Flashcards
Explain the 36” moon pool operations
Install the slope indicator and ball valves if needed. Calibrate the slope indicator.
Explain open water operations in detail. Include 36”, 26”/28”, 22”, 16”/18” receptacles
- run 36” conductor pipe and housing. Make up ball valves and slope indicator in the moon pool, then jet in. Allow soak time
- release DAT with 5 right hand turns to put in drill ahead mode
- drill out for 26”/28” casing then pull up DAT
- run 26”/28” casing and housing, cement that in, then release the tool and pull it up
- drill out for 22” section
- run the high pressure wellhead and 22” casing with 18” and 16” receptacles inline then cement that in
- set the rigid lock seal assembly with the ROV panel and rigid lock setting tool. If the ROV panel fails then use the dart sub or ball valve sub as back up.
- release the wellhead running tool and pull up
- run the BOP stack and riser and latch up to the wellhead for BOP testing
- open water operations are complete,
How is the total number of 36” joints to be installed determined?
It’s determined by the formation and water table
What are the typical wall thicknesses of 36” pipe? Are all the 36” joints in a conductor string the same?
The thickness is determined by the weight and grade of the pipe. As long as the threads match they can be used together. The most common are 1”, 1 1/2”, and 2”
How is the BHA length determined for the jet in process?
It is determined by the length of the conductor pipe. Placing the bit about 6” below the shoe is optimal
Explain the jetting in process in detail
The bit is spaced out close to the shoe. Fluid is pumped down the drill string and through the mud motor which causes the bit to rotate jetting the formation up and out of the way. This allows the conductor string to sink under it’s own weight into the sea bed. After you reach full depth the string is held in place while the formation settles back in around it
What is meant by soak time?
After jetting in soak time is required to allow the formation to settle back in around the pipe locking it in place
What is the maximum angle that a conductor housing can be at and how is it determined?
1 degree or less and it’s determined by the slope indicator
Explain why the 26”/28” conductor housing must be run whether you run the 26”/28” casing or not
The 26”/28” housing is what the wellhead lands in and must be run
Explain the difference between the UWD-15 16” and 18” large bore Submudline hangers and receptacles. How can you tell the difference by looking at them?
The 18” receptacle has the jewelry for the hanger to lock into while the 16” hanger has the jewelry on it. This is so that the 18” hanger can pass through the 16” receptacle without getting hung up on anything
Explain the difference between BHA and inner string
Bottom hole assembly is everything from the bit to the drill pipe. It consists of the bit, sub, mud motor, stabilizer, drill collar, heavy weight drill pipe, jars, and crossovers. Inner string is the drill pipe that is run inside of the casing below the running tool
Explain what set weight down means and how it is accomplished
It means to put the drill string in compression by setting weight down against resistance at land out
Explain what over pull means and how it is accomplished
It means to put the drill string in tension by pulling up against resistance
What is neutral weight and how is it calculated? Why is this number critical when running FMC equipment?
Neutral weight is the weight of landing string, inner string, tools and equipment that will be pulled up once the tool is released. It is critical so they you can find the neutral floating weight of our tool so that it can be functioned without any resistance or in a bind
How do you determine the weight of the block?
Look at the weight indicator when it is not supporting anything. The driller will have that number also
