Richard Oastler Flashcards
absentee landlord Thomas Thornhill
knew about Oastler’s support for 10 hours’ Movement and sympathised w/ movement’s aims, introducing him to several leading politicians
What led to his downfall?
Oastler’s involvement in anti-Poor Law agitation, also led to withdrawal of support from Thornhill
Oastler believed poor law commissioners were too powerful
believed supplying cheap labour in form of pauperised agricultural workers would lead to reduction in factory wages, leading to more pauperism in manufacturing towns in Midlands and North
1838
Oastler was urging workers to involve themselves in strikes and sabotage, led workers in violently resisting attempts to impose new Poor Law
Thornill’s reaction to Oastler’s involvement
dismissed him immediately - this did not stop Oastler from campaigning, had more time to urge working people to protest, placed in debtors’ prison from 2 years w/out income
